Geo-targeted ads without wasting budget

City map with highlighted geo-targeting radius zones

The default ad targeting setting is quietly expensive: Google targets “people in or regularly in” your area — which includes people who merely drive through it on I-84 twice a week.

For a local business, that's budget spent on people who will never book. The fix takes ninety seconds and routinely cuts wasted spend by double digits.

Switch to “presence” targeting

In Google Ads location settings, change the option from “presence or interest” to “presence” only. Now your ads show to people physically in your service area, not people searching “Boise” from elsewhere.

Draw radius, not city lines

City boundaries rarely match service areas. Draw radius targeting around your shop — 15-20 miles for most home services — or map your actual ZIP codes. For Meta ads, use a pinned pin drop rather than the metro preset.

Neighborhood-level copy converts better

Once targeting is tight, make the creative match. An ad that says “Serving Meridian homeowners since 2011” outperforms generic regional copy, because the reader instantly recognizes it's for them.

Let the data draw the map

After 30 days, check where conversions actually come from and trim ZIP codes that burn spend without booking. Geo-targeting isn't a one-time setup — it's a monthly five-minute tune-up that keeps cost-per-lead falling.
