Review velocity: the quiet local SEO superpower
5 min read · Jan 2025

Ask most owners about reviews and they'll tell you their total: 212 stars, 4.8 average. Ask them about velocity — how many they earned last month — and you'll usually get a shrug.
That's the mistake. Google's local algorithm reads review recency as a signal of an active, trusted business. A competitor with 80 reviews earning six a month will often outrank a business with 300 reviews and none since last summer.
What “good” velocity looks like
For most local service businesses, two to eight new reviews per month is a healthy, believable pace. The number matters less than the consistency — a flat, steady stream reads as trustworthy; spikes and dead zones read as manipulation or neglect.
How to build velocity without begging
The businesses that sustain velocity automate the ask. Right after a completed job — when goodwill peaks — a short text goes out with a direct link. One message, perfect timing, zero awkwardness.
Make responding part of the system too. A brief, personal reply to every review (yes, including the mediocre ones) signals engagement to both Google and the next customer reading them.
The compounding effect
Fresh reviews don't just nudge rankings — they change what searchers do. A 4.7-star listing with a review from last week simply gets more clicks than a 4.9 with the freshest review from eight months ago. More clicks feed back into better rankings.
Velocity is one of the few local SEO levers that improves ranking, conversion, and trust at the same time. It's the first system we install for every new client.
